why real life keeps me away

Sep. 12th, 2007 | 11:13 am
location: hell is doing renovations
mood: stressed stressed
music: none right now, soon jackhammers

Very quick update on my personal life because there isn't a topic on THEM for "brb. RL.".

1. I signed up for a Master of Clinical Psychology degree, took the exam and got in. Right now I have to go places and get all the paperwork done. The bureaucracy here sucks.

2. On top of that (classes fortunately start only in Oct) I got a 8 am - 4 pm job and a part time job I will turn down next Monday. Not curious to see how that turns out, but my day doesn't have 30 hours.

3. My home undergoes major repairs/renovations/upgrades/whatever so I'll be completely netwise unavailable for about a month. I've packed all my stuff and I'm still not sure where I am going to sleep. It kinda stresses me out.

4. My monitor finally met its demise. RIP!
Planning to buy a 17" TFT when I get my first pay.

Completely unrelated, a few weeks(?) ago I met my ex-wife [info]deora_mystic IRL. Kawaii! :P If only she didn't get into fangirl mode when we saw "HP and the Deathly Hollows" in that bookstore. *grins* I can't visit her due to point 3 above. We'll work something out, no? You still owe me cookies. and compensation for the latest trauma you've subjected me to :P Dee indeed.

Busy, oh so busy.

May. 24th, 2007 | 08:24 pm
location: real life...
mood: gloomy gloomy
music: the sound of my heart beating frantically

I have been less than active everywhere. This is due to the fact that I should be working on my thesis which is due in less than a month. Needless to say, I do NOT feel ready to graduate, but it will be as the Goddess wills it, so I don't really worry.

Nothing else is really relevant right now.

In sickness and in health....

Dec. 26th, 2006 | 08:09 pm
location: Painisakilljoy
mood: sick sick
music: .hack//liminality OST

I've been sick as a dog lately. In between [exageration] curling up in a fetal position waiting for the meds to kick in [/exageration] and watching anime trying to distract myself from whatever pain trumped painkillers, there was little else I could do. I don't normally really celebrate Christmas, but this year was all times low.

On the bright side, now I feel better so I started on .hack//G.U. It was unexpectedly enjoyable. Why unexpectedly? Well, because it had to be far, far more enjoyable than .hack//infection to be able to compete with the other games I should could be playing right now (first of all FF XII and Okami). But I played it for hours after hours, so it was, at least on first impression.

I'm going to keep playing it, possibly tonight. Considering the fact that recently (which can mean months, I'm not good with time) the only game I spent so many hours in a single session AND soon went back for more was FF XII, I'd say I'm enjoying G.U. more than what I write would led others believe. Maybe I really am too harsh when I write... Oh well, moving on. XD

I posted a rather lenghty (i.e. far too long, that's why I'm not posting it here) first impression. Basically, as a game, it doesn't hold a candle to FF XII and Okami. In fact the battles are now a bit more like Okami: "button mashing in a restricted battle zone till you kill all", but the exploration part between the button mashing adds very, very, very little to the original .hack games. The party "management" is as basic as it was then, unfortunately.
Anyway, I bitched about these today already, so if you are interested, go read the full lenght version.

Thankfully there are also many changes from the first series, but I won't go over them again here.

There are good things about .hack//G.U., and they are the ones that were to be expected. The offline/online integration that means you get to read news (and this time around watch news) and forums... FUN! The news, with the browser-like appearance and the integrated anime clips, the forums with more varied topics, the fanart section with actual comments and stuff, it's all much better than before!

Sure, other things are better too, like the graphics (duh). But recent PS2 games don't have eyecandy problems, and I'm not the type to care about graphic details so much. I recently played Shadow Hearts 1, which looks like a PS1 game. Now THOSE are "dated" graphics, not .hack//infection.

So what would destory a male Otome's powerz? Gay sex? Het sex? What if the male Otome has sex with an Otome? Would they cancel each other out?

Anyway, here it is: The world's first male Otome has surfaced. Quoted from the fic's summary. Oh boy...

"Line" manga

Oct. 11th, 2006 | 12:03 pm
location: mangaland
mood: excited excited
music: Yuki Kajiura

Line is a 2003 manga by Kotegawa Yua, author of Anne Freaks and Arcana.
The art is good, as was to be expected from this mangaka. The subject is not particularly original (ordinary girl finds a cellphone, is being called and told of suicides she could prevent, there's also suicide sites and all, but I'm not spoiling the plot too much), neither is the execution particularly deep or surprising. Well, there's a message about conforming to people's expectations even if it means being less than what you are. But what really caught my interest is the shoujo ai (it's not resolved in any way, though, or even particularly clear).

All in all, a good read. There's just 4 chapters.

Avatar The Last Airbender the game

Oct. 10th, 2006 | 09:11 pm
mood: annoyed annoyed

I admit that this review is based on a first impression, but it was enough. This game has too many flaws.

Story:

Have you seen the series? That's it.

Because the game recreates the series, presumably for people who have already seen it, there are issues like Aang saying "I'm just going to look around and then meet up with Suki.", though he had just met the girl and she hadn't introduced herself, or "It's really nice how everyone has been treating me" though I could only talk to 4 people - and that's not actual dialogue either. It's sloppy and disappointing for those who wanted to experience the Avatar TLA world.

Speaking of dialogue, do we need to be told Appa's lines? As in "growls/yawns" (Yes, that's an exact quote!). Can't we hear him? Is it supposed to be funny? And why can't Aang interact more with Sokka and Katara?

Graphics:

This is a problem before the game actually starts.

So the last episode left us off at the gang still in the desert, with Appa missing and Aang royally pissed off. Katara did her "Avatar taming" routine once more aaand cut.

Now Ep 12 - The Serpent's Pass

Attack of the Returning Characters, Moses!Katara, evil bureaucracy, Toph Is Our Savior, Kisses...  )

Ficbitches links

Sep. 17th, 2006 | 01:05 am
mood: amused amused

For [info]northlander72 :D

Off the top of my head, some links to the most FUBAR fics ficbitches sporked:

1. I'm mostly using the pitas links because of the archive there, but all these can be found on lj too, plus comments.
2. This is what I can remember right now so I might add more later.

Ok, MOST of this is porn because this is the most fucked up fanfiction being written. You've been warned. Seriously.

The fic that started this post:
HORRIBLE FIC, bestiality and wtf up the wazoo (Tifa gives birth to a chocobo. yeah): Chocobo Nights (that Northy describes here)

Truly horrid ROFL writing: here + MST of said fic (even funnier)

Some of weirdest pr0n ever Pop Goes The Ranma - you've been warned by the title... (I've read it again, and the link is to lj, complete with the author's comments! Wee! It's a must read.)

just wtf funny: Cloud has sex with the ice chick mini-boss + stupidity.

the end of this sporking has some of the funniest ideas I've read : Chrono Love

major shota based on Wish

bestiality : Interceptor = FF VI dog

Totoro hentai!

Fairy Musketeer Akazukin

Sep. 13th, 2006 | 12:10 pm

Because my connection is crappy these days (a call to the provider is not out of the question at this point) I've watched older series and now I'm catching up with the ongoing stuff I've been downloading. If the speed problem keeps on I might have to stop downloading some of these series... Damn. Anyway, this entry is, as usual, also posted here, complete with screenshots.

“Magically inflating boobs” - the ultimate link(s)

Sep. 8th, 2006 | 04:39 pm
mood: amused amused

No, no, it's not that I am an otaku. Really.
Seriously.
But we keep talking about how breast size seems to change from animator to animator scene to scene. Now the whole process is illustrated in a handy flash. The expression on her face is priceless. Study the process well. Or, for a more flippant, less scientific approach, check this one.

I also must record this site for posterity. Check out the games for a quick laugh. He (though the name is female the FAQ states he is male - not that this is surprising) was asked by a lot of people to do Pokemon girls. I... cringe.

So true...
So very, very true...
It makes me think twice about some statement I've read on Y!Answers "I watch anime because it's art".

Saw this on [info]wintersweet's lj so here's mine.

OTOH I know the site with the "Fics from Hell" pic. Small world, huh?

batshit insane Christian

Aug. 19th, 2006 | 10:54 am

I found this on [info]mock_the_stupid (despite it being fake!news)Kidney donor wants her kidney back when recipient ditches Christianity. To actually say that your kidney saved her life and then regret giving it because she is no longer Christian? Man, I can totally see this happening :)) Why? Am I just an anti-Christian Hell-bound jerk? Well, possibly, but still ...weee...(this being my current favorite award.)

Manga - Diamond Head

Aug. 18th, 2006 | 12:31 pm
mood: awake
music: Yuki Kajiura

(Yes, yes, just a THEM Boards X-post plus uploaded pages. I am lazy.)

It's shoujo, it starts out unimpressively: female transfer student gets invited to join a male group (the Judicature Club, who acts to judge student issues, and therefore has great authority), one of the guys is a bishounen to the point of looking like a girl (he is also the judge and has an unexpected backstory), but it manages to avoid most of the trappings of the genre. For one thing the romance is not what's expected, and there is actual friendship there. The ending was good. All in all, a serious manga.

The art is also good. I'm uploading some:

Avatar TLA: Toph issues

Aug. 17th, 2006 | 12:40 pm

This started here: http://community.livejournal.com/fanficrants/3222925.html?thread=91345549#t91345549, and got too offtopic (besides, searching for the posts I made when I get some new ideas would have been a pain), so I moved my thinking aloud here.

Ok, quick recap anyway: Toph was born blind, how does her "sight" work? We only know 2 things:
1. She said she can see with her bending.
2. When we see from her POV a vibration "builds" objects like a wave in the moment when the objects touch the earth. It works for the whole object i.e. someone's body though just a hand touches the earth, and it looks a lot like a sonar - which would fit her seeing the burried boat, but still not the ants (repeat, for convenience: we saw the ants on a tree root. Trees are not earth, and ants walking on trees shouldn't make a vibration on earth).
In an earlier post I assumed she can also calculate angles and this is how she identified the trajectory of the flying rocks she dodged/caught in "The Blind Bandit". It might also be possible that she hears them, or even that she can somehow perceive them in the air, as they are still earth. (When Toph controlled the dust clouding the air in "The Blind Bandit" she proved she can control uh... "flying earth").

In case Toph's sight is based just on earth vibrations (which it should be as she said she sees with her bending) there is one thing that's a bit off in the supposition that her hearing is "uberspeshul": she is not really blind, so there was less need for her to develop hearing as a substitute. Of course it can be said that she didn't see with her bending till she mastered it.

And this raises another question: we see from Katara's case that (advanced) bending must be learned even by potentially great benders. So how did Toph develop her excellent bending? She couldn't have read scrolls in secret, she wasn't taught by her teacher... Because she is the only one using a different style, she seemed to discover earthbending by herself. (We must remember that the fact that her style corresponds to the real life Southern Praying Mantis only means that the creators of Avatar TLA based her movements on this style, not that the style itself exists in Avatarverse and therefore it's not her "invention".)

I think that Toph's ability to see with her bending was innate, not developed as a substitute for her blindness. She is only 12 years old and already one of the greatest earthbenders, despite having no serious teacher. She must have been born with some special gift for "listening the earth" (she listens to little else :)) ) and I think her style is just a natural outer expression of her bending. It is possible, as the legend said that the first earthbenders learned from badgermoles, which obviously didn't include the Hung Gar movements themselves.

Fansubs choosing, ditching work, lj

Aug. 7th, 2006 | 09:15 am
location: home. yes, home, not at work.
mood: listless listless
music: Le Tigre

1. I think I should drop Shinsen-Subs's version of Night Head Genesis. The anidb comments favor AnimeKeep+gg's version. I normally like Shinsen-Subs, but if they work with bad raws, it's not worth it. I also gave up waiting for their version of .hack//roots of episodes 9 and 10, and I am getting za world's sub for them too. I can watch the HQ, but just barely (If I fast forward/rewind/jump, my PC freezes for a moment, and then I can't see the subtitles. OTOH, could this latter be blamed on the encoding? I don't have this problem with HQ releases of other series.) so I have a mix of HQ and LQ. I will soon marathon all these newer episodes and see if the LQ is distracting, but it didn't seem so.

2. No, I didn't actually give up the job, I just took time off and today I was supposed to go back (because I said so, not because the contract forces me to), but I don't feel like it. I am thinking of switching hours so that I go there is the afternoon, something like 13 to 19. It still is 6 hours, and they are better as I get to enjoy the mornings.

3. My flist is out of control if I don't check it out for 3 days. I tried the filters, but they are not practical when I want to read all the comm posts anyway. Because I get to read the posts soon enough, when I comment I get comments back. I am now really an lj member, I suppose. :))
